Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a Construction Skills Certificate valid for five years, underscoring their commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.

Do you have parking available on site?

We have a limited number of free parking available on site – do give us a call to check availability on the day. Letchworth Garden City Train Station is also a 30 minute walk away for those who are travelling longer distances.

Will you provide food and drink?

For all day courses we provide drinks and a cold buffet at lunchtime for courses held at our premises. Please let us know ahead of time any dietary requirements so they can be catered for.

How does the CITB Levy work in terms of claiming back money for this course?

If you are paying the CITB Levy, you may be eligible to claim back money for attending any CITB course. The process involves submitting a claim to the CITB after completing the course. You will need to provide proof of attendance and payment, and the CITB will assess your claim based on their criteria. Who will the course benefit?

What are the steps to follow if a delegate does not pass the end-of-course examination?

If a delegate does not pass the end-of-course examination, they may need to retake the exam or, depending on the provider’s policy, possibly attend the course again. Detailed guidance on retake policies, additional support, and associated costs should be obtained from the course provider.

What is the CITB SMSTS course offered in Letchworth?

This is a five-day comprehensive training course delivered at Safety for Business’s Letchworth centre, aligned with the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme. It’s tailored for site managers, project leaders, and experienced supervisors, covering legal, health, welfare, environmental and high-risk safety responsibilities. On successful completion, you’ll receive a CITB SMSTS certificate valid for five years.

Who should attend, and are there entry requirements?

Ideal for individuals managing or preparing to manage construction sites. There are no formal qualifications required, but delegates must have a supervisory or managerial role or experience. You’ll need to be able to read, write, and understand English, and bring photographic ID, your National Insurance number, and CITB registration if available.

How is the course assessed, and what score is needed to pass?

Assessment methods include continuous evaluation through group work, presentations, and practical tasks, culminating in a multiple-choice exam and written questions. You must attend all 37.5 training hours (5 days) to qualify. There are safety-critical questions you must answer correctly to pass.

What topics are covered during the five days?

The syllabus spans a wide range, including: UK’s health and safety legislation (e.g., HASWA, CDM), Risk assessment and control strategies, Working at height, excavations, scaffolding, electricity, Occupational health, waste and environmental management, Behavioural safety and leadership responsibilities

Can I get grant funding or levy reimbursement?

Yes—eligible employers registered with CITB may claim a grant of around £240 per delegate on approved SMSTS courses. Bring your CITB Levy registration number at booking or on the first day.

Is the course available online or just in-person at Letchworth?

Safety for Business delivers the course in-person at their Letchworth training centre. However, CITB‑approved providers also offer live virtual classroom delivery (via Zoom/Teams) with identical content and assessment structure.

What facilities are included at the Letchworth centre?

The Letchworth training centre typically includes parking (limited spaces), lunch and refreshments each day, and professional-sized classrooms capped at around 20 delegates.

What happens after completing the course?

You’ll receive your CITB Site Safety Plus SMSTS certificate, valid for five years. Employers often require this for site manager roles, and the certificate must be renewed via a two‑day SMSTS Refresher before expiry.
