Delivered in Letchworth Garden City, this CITB SMSTS Refresher course helps construction site managers and senior supervisors update their knowledge of current health and safety legislation, industry best practices, and changes affecting the construction and civil engineering industries. The course revisits key areas covered in the original SMSTS training while introducing new topics aligned with modern construction site safety standards and working practices.

Do you have parking available on site?

We have a limited number of free parking available on site – do give us a call to check availability on the day. Letchworth Garden City Train Station is also a 30 minute walk away for those who are travelling longer distances.

Will you provide food and drink?

For all day courses we provide drinks and a cold buffet at lunchtime for courses held at our premises. Please let us know ahead of time any dietary requirements so they can be catered for.

How does the CITB Levy work in terms of claiming back money for this course?

Who will the course benefit?

People who currently hold a valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate or a follow up SMSTS Refresher certificate. Candidates must not let their existing certificate expire before starting the refresher course. Anyone who does not attend before the certificate expires may risk forfeiting the right to attend a refresher course and may be required to attend a full course.

What is the CITB SMSTS Refresher course in Letchworth?

This is a two‑day refresher training offered at Safety for Business’s Letchworth centre in Hertfordshire, specifically for individuals who have previously completed and passed the five‑day SMSTS course. It renews your SMSTS certificate for a further five years and brings your site management safety knowledge up to date.

Who is this refresher course for and what are the entry requirements?

It’s open only to delegates holding a current, valid SMSTS certificate. You also need to show valid photographic ID (passport or driver’s licence) and have competence in reading, writing, and understanding English.

How is the course assessed and what’s the pass mark?

Assessment is continuous throughout the two days—participation in group work, presentations and practical tasks—plus a final multiple-choice test. You must attend all 17.5 hours of training and achieve the minimum pass mark on the test to renew your certificate.

What topics are covered during the refresher?

Day‑by‑day content includes: UK health, safety & welfare legislation, including updates, Legal responsibilities of site management (HASWA, CDM regulations), Risk assessments, method statements, RIDDOR reporting, behavioural safety, Occupational health, working at height hazards, subcontractor management, and environmental best practice

Is the course grant‑funded?

Yes. Eligible employers registered with CITB can claim a grant (around £120 per delegate) toward the course costs. You’ll need your company’s CITB Levy number at booking or on the course day.

Can I attend online or in‑person at Letchworth?

Safety for Business delivers the SMSTS Refresher in‑person at their Letchworth training centre, with free parking and facilities.

What happens if my existing certificate has expired?

You must complete the full five‑day SMSTS course, unless CITB has granted an official extension. Once the certificate has expired, the refresher option is no longer available.

What next after completing the refresher?

You will receive an updated CITB SMSTS Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five more years. Continued certification ensures your eligibility for site manager roles and compliance with industry standards and CSCS card requirement.
