Book NowThe CITB-accredited SMSTS Refresher Course is a vital update for professionals in site management, designed to refresh and enhance their understanding of safety practices and legislative changes in the construction industry. This two-day training is tailored for individuals who have previously completed the five-day SMSTS course and possess a valid certificate. The course not only revisits topics from the original program but also introduces new subjects to align with current industry standards. Limited to a maximum of 12 participants, the course ensures a thorough learning experience and, upon successful completion, attendees will receive a Construction Skills Certificate valid for five years. This refresher is essential for maintaining the high standards of health and safety required in construction management roles.
The aims of this course are to:
- Improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues
- Identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation and new working practices

A valid certificate of the full course, dated on or before the course start date, is required to enrol. This must be emailed to kate@safetyforbusiness.co.uk. Participants without a valid certificate cannot join and wont receive a refund.
Do you have parking available on site?
We have a limited number of free parking available on site – do give us a call to check availability on the day. Letchworth Garden City Train Station is also a 30 minute walk away for those who are travelling longer distances.
Will you provide food and drink?
For all day courses we provide drinks and a cold buffet at lunchtime for courses held at our premises. Please let us know ahead of time any dietary requirements so they can be catered for.
How does the CITB Levy work in terms of claiming back money for this course?
If you are paying the CITB Levy, you may be eligible to claim back money for attending any CITB course. The process involves submitting a claim to the CITB after completing the course. You will need to provide proof of attendance and payment, and the CITB will assess your claim based on their criteria. It is advisable to contact the CITB directly or visit their website for detailed information on the eligibility requirements and the step-by-step process for claiming back the course fees.
Who will the course benefit?
People who currently hold a valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate or a follow up SMSTS Refresher certificate. Candidates must not let their existing certificate expire before starting the refresher course. Anyone who does not attend before the certificate expires may risk forfeiting the right to attend a refresher course and may be required to attend a full course.
What is the CITB SMSTS Refresher course in Letchworth?
This is a two‑day refresher training offered at Safety for Business’s Letchworth centre in Hertfordshire, specifically for individuals who have previously completed and passed the five‑day SMSTS course. It renews your SMSTS certificate for a further five years and brings your site management safety knowledge up to date.
Who is this refresher course for and what are the entry requirements?
It’s open only to delegates holding a current, valid SMSTS certificate. You also need to show valid photographic ID (passport or driver’s licence) and have competence in reading, writing, and understanding English.
How is the course assessed and what’s the pass mark?
Assessment is continuous throughout the two days—participation in group work, presentations and practical tasks—plus a final multiple-choice test. You must attend all 17.5 hours of training and achieve the minimum pass mark on the test to renew your certificate.
What topics are covered during the refresher?
Day‑by‑day content includes: UK health, safety & welfare legislation, including updates, Legal responsibilities of site management (HASWA, CDM regulations), Risk assessments, method statements, RIDDOR reporting, behavioural safety, Occupational health, working at height hazards, subcontractor management, and environmental best practice
Is the course grant‑funded?
Yes. Eligible employers registered with CITB can claim a grant (around £120 per delegate) toward the course costs. You’ll need your company’s CITB Levy number at booking or on the course day.
Can I attend online or in‑person at Letchworth?
Safety for Business delivers the SMSTS Refresher in‑person at their Letchworth training centre, with free parking and facilities.
What happens if my existing certificate has expired?
You must complete the full five‑day SMSTS course, unless CITB has granted an official extension. Once the certificate has expired, the refresher option is no longer available.
What next after completing the refresher?
You will receive an updated CITB SMSTS Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five more years. Continued certification ensures your eligibility for site manager roles and compliance with industry standards and CSCS card requirement.
