FAQs about CITB Courses

What are the costs of the different CITB courses, and do they vary based on location or delivery method?

Prices for each course have been provided on each CITB Course page.

Are there any requirements for enrolling in the advanced CITB courses, such as SMSTS or SSSTS?

Most CITB courses do not require prior training, but advanced courses like the SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) and SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) are designed for individuals in specific roles. The SMSTS course is typically for site managers and those with managerial responsibilities, while the SSSTS course is aimed at supervisors overseeing site safety. Those enrolling in the refresher courses (SMSTS-R and SSSTS-R) must have a valid and in-date certificate from the original course.

How long are the CITB certifications valid, and what are the requirements for renewal?

CITB certifications are valid for five years. To maintain certification, individuals must complete the SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) or SSSTS Refresher (SSSTS-R) course before their certificate expires. If the certificate has expired, participants will need to retake the full course. It is recommended to book a refresher course well in advance of the expiration date to avoid losing certification status.

Are there any funding options or grants available for CITB courses?

Yes, CITB-registered employers may be eligible for CITB grants and funding to help cover the cost of training. Employers who pay the CITB Levy can claim funding for eligible courses. Additionally, some local authorities and industry bodies may offer financial assistance for construction workers looking to gain certifications. Individuals and employers should check the CITB website or contact the training provider for details on available funding and how to apply.

What is the format of the training (in-person, online, or hybrid), and are there any assessments or exams?

The CITB courses at Safety For Business (UK) Ltd are delivered in-person at our training centre in Letchworth Garden City.

Each CITB course includes assessments—typically a multiple-choice exam at the end of the course. Some courses also involve practical assessments to ensure participants can apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Successful completion of these assessments is required to receive the certification.

What happens if I fail the exam, can I resit it for free?

If you happen to fail the exam, you have the option to resit it once for free. You can either resit on the same day or take some time to revise using the course training materials and return on another day for the resit. However, if your score falls below the minimum passing level, you will not be eligible for a resit and will need to retake the entire course at the full cost. Please note, these passing score requirements are set by CITB and cannot be altered by Safety for Business, CITB may also change these percentage scores with short notice. The minimum passing scores for one free retake currently are as followed: Health and Safety Awareness must be no less than 60%, SSSTS must be no less than 67%, and SMSTS must be no less than 69%.
