But what’s the actual difference between the two, and which course is right for you?
We’ll explore the key differences between SMSTS and SSSTS, helping you make an informed decision about which course best suits your role, career goals, and legal obligations.
What is the CITB SSSTS Course?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need SMSTS or SSSTS for a CSCS card?
No. Neither SMSTS nor SSSTS courses directly qualify you for a CSCS card. However, they are often required by employers for supervisory or management roles and support your application for a more senior card (such as the Gold Supervisor or Black Manager card). For a CSCS Labourer (Green) Card, you’ll need the CITB Health & Safety Awareness course.
Can I take SSSTS before I become a supervisor?
Yes. The SSSTS course is suitable for those who are about to take on a supervisory role. It’s also ideal if you want to boost your CV and show you’re ready for progression into leadership.
Is the SMSTS course difficult?
SMSTS is an intensive five-day course designed for those in management or senior site roles. It covers more complex topics, including legal duties and risk assessments. While it is challenging, our experienced trainers provide full support, interactive sessions, and practical examples to help you succeed.
How long do the certificates last for SSSTS and SMSTS?
Both SSSTS and SMSTS certificates are valid for 5 years. To stay compliant, you’ll need to take a refresher course before your certificate expires—SMSTS Refresher is 2 days; SSSTS Refresher is 1 day.
Can I do either course online?
Currently, Safety For Business delivers all CITB SMSTS and SSSTS courses in-person at our Letchworth Garden City training centre. This format ensures maximum engagement and hands-on learning, especially for topics like risk assessment and incident management.
What happens if I let my certificate expire?
If your SMSTS or SSSTS certificate expires before you take the refresher, you’ll be required to complete the full course again. That’s why we recommend booking your refresher a few months before expiry.
Does my employer need to pay for the course?
It depends on your workplace policy. Some companies fund SMSTS or SSSTS courses as part of professional development. However, many self-employed workers and contractors also choose to pay for the training themselves to boost employability.
I have a CITB Levy Number, can I use it with Safety for Business Courses?
Yes, if you have a valid CITB Levy number, you may be eligible to claim CITB grant funding when booking eligible courses through Safety for Business. Please ensure your Levy number is active, as we will also require it to be added to the booking form.
