What is the Fire Safety in the Design & Management of Healthcare Premises course about?
The course is designed to meet the training needs of hospital Fire Safety Managers, Fire Safety Advisors, local authority fire service inspecting officers, architects, building control officers or any other colleague responsible for fire safety within a healthcare environment. It relates to the understanding and application of the relevant Firecode suite of documents (Health Technical Memorandum – HTM).
This course is hosted by Northern Branch of the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO) and the trainer is ‘Steven Robinson’.
What will you learn?
On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to interpret and use the HTM documents as they relate to fire safety design and management within healthcare premises. Understanding these documents will allow delegates to consult and give advice on new healthcare buildings and on major alterations to existing healthcare buildings. The subjects covered are:
- HTM 05-01: Managing healthcare fire safety
- HTM 05-02: Guidance in support of functional provisions for healthcare premises.
- HTM 05-03: Operational provisions manuals:
• Part A General Fire Safety
• Part B Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
• Part D Commercial Enterprises on Healthcare Premises
• Part M Guidance on the Fire Safety of Atria in Healthcare Premises
How is the training course taught?
Instructional methods include:
- Powerpoint presentations
- Interactive discussions
- Whiteboard ‘chalk and talk’
The course has both individual and syndicate exercises to reinforce learning with a summative assessment taken by delegates on the Friday morning.
Course requirements:
Delegates should as a minimum possess an understanding of fire safety principles. Ideally delegates will be existing fire safety practitioners who also understand the Building Regulations Approved Document B, Volume 2 – Buildings other than dwelling houses.

The course is recognised by the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and The National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO) following peer review by both organisations and attendees may claim 27 hours Continuing Professional Development.
